The imposing River Creuse marks the border of the famous Touraine and Poitou regions. At one time, during the reign of Richard the Lionheart, it actually marked the border between England and France! It is an area steeped in history and rich in heritage. The famous chateaux of the Loire Valley – now a World Heritage Site – are within easy reach. Pretty villages, some with fascinating cave dwellings, proliferate in the region. With the network of rivers, rolling countryside and forest tracks, there are leisure activities and opportunities to enjoy nature for everyone's taste. And for lovers of food and wine, this is a dream. Traditional markets galore, produce of the highest quality, classic restaurants and, of course, the vineyards of the Loire.
This is rural France, ‘La France Profonde', at its very best!
||The village of St Remy sur Creuse is 2 km away, or a picturesque 30 minutes walk through the woods.
The settlement dates back a thousand years and is the site of a fascinating series of cave dwellings set into the rocks above
the main village. Guided visits are available and there are a number of organised events throughout the year, see
The village also boasts an Auberge, offering a range of traditional cuisine at very reasonable prices –
or simply a refreshing drink as you watch the world go by.
The larger towns of Descartes (birthplace of philosopher
Rene Descartes) and Dange St Romain (both 5 km) offer a full range of facilities including supermarkets, boulangeries,
pharmacies, and banks. Bustling Descartes market, held on Sunday mornings, draws people from miles around and is a
real social event.
La Belardiere also enjoys a daily delivery from the local Boulangerie each morning.
Places to Go
||The region's Chateaux are world famous – and spectacular. Here are just a few to whet your appetite –
all within easy reach.
For gardening enthusiasts, several (eg Villandry, Chatonniere) have the most magnificent gardens and throughout the year
there are many events and festivals on a gardening theme. One of our favourites is the ‘Festival de la Tomate' in early September.
We are surrounded by beautiful towns and villages, each with something different to offer the visitor – from medieval
Chauvigny and Angles sur l'Anglin to the south to historic Tours, Chinon, Amboise and Loches to the north,
and to just plain beautiful Montresor to the east – there's something from everyone.
For the family, the Futuroscope theme park is just 45 minutes drive.
The Velo-rail at Chauvigny (45 minutes) is fun trip out, as is the water park at Descartes (10 minutes).
For nature lovers, the Brenne Regional Park is an absolute must for bird watchers.
Stunning Beauval zoo, recently voted the 10th best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor, boasts over 600 species, including 2 giant pandas.
And much, much more…
